They're lazy and great.
1. Although sloths have a reputation for being slow and lazy, they only sleep around ten hours a day.
2. Their predators are eagles, snakes, and jaguars, but they're well protected because they spend most of their time in trees.
3. Sloths are either two-toed or three-toed, but the two-toed sloths are a little bigger.
4. Their diet is mostly leaves, so they don't get much nutrition. This is why sloths move so slowly, to conserve energy.
5. When a female is ready to mate, she lets out a scream to alert the males in her area. The eligible sloth bachelors then make their way to the sound of the screams.
6. Baby sloths hang onto their mom's belly for the first couple of weeks, and they stay by their mom's side for up to four years.
7. Algae grows on sloths' fur, which helps disguise them from predators.
8. Sloths only come down from the trees to urinate and defecate, and they always go to the same exact spot. This only happens once a week.
9. They are arboreal animals, which means they live and spend almost their entire lives in trees.
12. Even though they look more like monkeys, sloths are related to anteaters and armadillos.
13. The pygmy three-toed sloth is critically endangered and they are found only on a small island off the coast of Panama, called Isla Escudo de Veraguas.
14. Two-toed sloths are nocturnal, while three-toed sloths are diurnal, which means they're active during the day.
15. Extinct species of sloths were as large as elephants.
16. Sloths have a very slow-moving digestive system and sometimes it can take up to a month for them to digest a meal.
